CMS Issues Alert Regarding New Excluded ICD-9 Codes and Corresponding ICD-10 Codes

On July 11, 2013, CMS issued a technical alert for liability insurance (including self-insurance), no-fault insurance, and workers’ compensation as it relates to MMSEA Section 111 reporting. Within the alert, CMS has provided two new ICD-9 codes that will no longer be accepted by CMS as of October 1, 2013: 959.8 (other specified sites, including multiple injury) and 959.9 (unspecified site injury).

Additionally, as discussed within an alert dated June 11, 2013, CMS will be making a transition to ICD-10 on October 1, 2014. For a copy of this alert and the timelines regarding transition to ICD-10 for MMSEA Section 111, click here.

Due to the fact that CMS and RREs will soon be transitioning to ICD-10 coding for reporting, within this alert CMS has provided and identified the full list of ICD-10 codes that correspond to ICD-9 codes that are not accepted.
